Inspired by Elvira Dyangani Ose’s curatorial vision for the GIBCA 2015 proposing the notion of “history, as an open work” this curatorial concept is developed by Tímea Junghaus, curator of Gallery8 – Roma Contemporary Art Space (Budapest, Hungary) in collaboration with Gerlesborgsskolan (Sweden).
The exhibition is planned as an attempt to apply critical theories to analyze the history and present-day situation of Roma in Europe, however it is not merely an identity exhibition. It shall inspect the real impact of the radical discourses of nomadicity, encampment, cosmopolitanism, feminist critique and critical whiteness in the Roma context, while encountering (or competing with) current notions of the nation, nationalism, strategic essentialism, sovereignty, and Europe.
