Local history is often considered amateurish and of lesser value compared to grander historical narratives. But could it be that it is precisely through this local knowledge that dominant hierarchies and knowledge systems may be challenged? For the past twenty years, Grönberg and Magnusson have been conducting fieldwork on the mountains of Billingen and Kinnekulle in western Sweden. The mountains’ multi-layered geological stratification is a point of departure for an interdisciplinary excavation of the different layers of knowledge that have been generated about the area. The installation features a montage of edited material—photographs, graphic prints, books, reprints, magazines, postcards, maps, diagrams, scientific articles, and more—from the artists’ archives related to the mountains. The material not only makes possible different ways of reading and looking at the mountains themselves, but also reveals how they have been documented and mediated over the centuries.
