Amid B and C and a knot and E (A conver-something)
Artist Simnikiwe Buhlungu invites to four public sessions developed together with Göteborgs Konsthall in Gamlestaden and at Gothenburg City Library.
Conceived by the artist as exercises between the realms of reading and listening, Amid B and C and a knot and E (a conver-something) ask for public participation in sounding, dissonating and harmonising textual and sonic material together as an attempt of storing knowledges; in situ and in transience.
The title, Amid B and C and a knot and E (a conver-something), has a departure point in the musical notes A,B,C and E on the chromatic musical scale; in that, what sounds/utterances/timescales/half-steps/choppings and screwings could be encountered within the crevices of sounds/keys if time was spent in this? What is – and has already been – happening “in between”?
The workshop session at Medborgarhuset will look at how orature and tone is crucial as a storage mechanism for transgenerational and cultural histories.
References will look at Djelis, story tellers and poets in Bamako, Mali (Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté teaching her daughter Rokia Koyate the Epic of Sundiata Keita). Works from several Djelis reciting the same song will be shared as will the artists own texts on how shifts of tone when speaking can alter not what is only understood but how it is historicised.
Register here to attend the mid-day workshop at Medborgarhuset.
