Simona Dumitriu and Tawanda Appiah are the curators of the regional exhibition in 2021.

Involved in the project from the moment of the open call, Simona Dumitriu and Tawanda Appiah invited practitioners who work with art in the Västra Götaland region to react in their proposals to the following questions:

“What are some of the deepest histories seeded in personal or public archives and records, in Västra Götaland’s ports, towns, villages and coastal areas? What are some of the borders that restrict today’s context in the region? What are the disruptions going on? How do art practitioners in the region take the power to make the discomfort or the pain visible, to project this discomfort into art and engagement, to interrogate the web of politeness? From isolation, exclusion, disconnection, dissociation, partitioning, what do you see as places of arrival?”

Simona Dumitriu and Tawanda Appiah started their curatorial collaboration in 2018 at Skånes konstförening, Malmö. Together they created a robust programme which interweaved exhibitions, talks, workshops, interventions and various discursive gatherings in the city.

Outside of their collaboration, Tawanda Appiah works independently as a curator, researcher and writer. He is a part of Njelele Art Station and previously worked at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe as the Curator of Education and Public Programming.
Simona Dumitriu is a teacher, curator and organiser. Before Malmö, she was one of the initiators of the mythical Platforma art space and collective in Bucharest, Romania, and taught at the National University of the Arts in Bucharest. She also works with her life partner, as Simona&Ramona, a writing and research duo.
