GUIDED TOUR – “FRANSKA TOMTEN” (PACKHUSPLATSEN)

Franska tomten (currently Packhusplatsen), a plot of land in the city’s harbor that in 1784 was exchanged for the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy as part of a trade deal between Sweden and France, is used as the narrative point of departure for the biennal.

During the tour, we will talk about “Franska tomten” and its colonial history reflected in the buildings and activities that exist on the site today – the former headquarters of a transatlantic shipping company, a court, a casino, the port and the sea – which connect the past to the present and the City of Gothenburg to other parts of the world.

“Franska tomten” is used as the narrative starting point of the biennial. The tour offers you to reflect on the city and site and its relationship to its history and present day.
