Podium – All At Sea in Antarctica – A Thought Experiment
Alexander Stevenson’s two videos, screened in parallel with similar visual tropes, force new readings of each other and of the entirely new space created by bringing them together. All at Sea (2017) depicts the artist’s attempts to relate to a lighthouse, a historical object/building, on a human level. The work indirectly explores genealogy, anatomy, cartography, and being hopelessly lost; separated from historical events and individuals. Antarctic Thought Experiment (2020) shows dialogues with academics who have never visited their object of study, Antarctica, which inform ‘translations‘ from Antarctic metaphors into objects and performances in a strange and heavily constructed landscape.
